Mark,
Here is a thread I created when I first started playing with Motion, how
I set everything up, and some advice on cameras :
https://forum.pine64.org/showthread.php?tid=5166
I use POE, by using these adapters (good discounts if you buy in
quantities) :
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Power-Over-Ethernet-Passive-PoE-Adapter-Injector-Splitter-Kit-With-Cable-Black/254026766868?hash=item3b252cda14%3Ag%3AQpoAAOSw4ohcFM45&LH_BIN=1
Using the POE adapters also lets you put your cameras on a common power
supply (i.e. PC supply), and put them on a UPS.
As for cameras, buyer beware.? All of the cameras seem to have "phone
home" built in.? Definitely put them behind a firewall.? I spent around
$20 each for the 2MP ones I have, and I've been very happy with them.?
The cheaper 1MP cameras, not so much.
After reading the above thread, if you have more questions, just ask.

HI Rob,
Thanks for that Ill start digging.
I have a number of PCs kicking about and a (ups somewhere) that I can
throw linux onto so thats not an issue.
UTP everywhere even out in the garage. Ill grab some of those POE
adaptors, should simplify? things a little.
I borrowed a hikvision camera last night but couldnt even get past step
1 in their manual. Connect via utp to laptop, connect to 12v,open
browser 192.168.1.64...browser eventually gives up. Cameras green net
lights are flashing. I tried default reset but still nothing. Perhaps
its too smart. The manual mentioned something further on about
"activating" the camera using their software(which of course is windows).
I think I need some linux network tools to "see" net traffic/whats going
on.Recommendations? something easy.
as in how do you know "All of the cameras seem to have "phone home"
built in"
I was hoping for something like...
A camera with SD. Mount them so its hard to access/pinch/destroy.
Remote view(via motion) live stream if I want a look see.
Otherwise circular store to its SD on motion detect(from camera and or
various other sensors I have about)
Then access the SD via utp if I decided I want to download vid.
Ill try looking for Hisilicon (HI3518E) cams as you said the cheapy ebay
ones tell you very little.
Many moons ago, long b4 all the clever gear turned up ..and my brain
went to mush;) I had two webcams sending still images from work. A
debian PC captured an image every 30sec or a PIR triggered an instant
burst of 10frames at 2sec. A cron job looked at the PIR log and emailed
me if changed. I remoted in and grabbed the images. A little later I
managed a, python script I think , that created an animated gif of the
last 40 images or so.
Cant recall the details now ,lots changed since then, im way out of IT now.
