Dave's historic perspective on eBird is illuminating. Users might like to try the new version, eBird2, that has a host of new features as Rob described. It's much more engaging now, with all kinds of games to encourage birders to play while supplying data for conservation use. In addition, there are a number of equivalents around the world that will do similar things to eBird. You can find those at the BirdLife International site called www.worldbirds.org There's a world map to click on and it will take you to the equivalent software in the UK, Ireland, Denmark, Turkey and other places. If you click on the map for the US, Canada or Mexico it will take you to eBird (or aVer Aves). The vision is to "to create a network of Internet systems that provides a platform for the collection, storage and retrieval of bird observations worldwide". So Dave, you can enter your Kenya data to http://www.worldbirds.org/kenya/Main.php and your British sightings to http://www.bto.org/birdtrack/ if you have the time . . . My understanding is that the tech guys at Cornell are working on providing a simple way to transfer data from personal list-keeping software into eBird so that all those data can be added to the central database. Sweet. The next challenge will be to get these systems to talk to each other seamlessly so that everyone can make use of the collective data set.
