I checked Jeff's blog and that is not the bird.

Green herons, great blue herons, and black-crowned night-herons are  
all regularly seen in that same area.

The bird we saw is much different in markings and structure than that  
photo or the green herons which are commonly seen here. It hangs  
around with the black-crowned night-herons, which usually only show  
up as evening falls.
