Saw several Snow Buntings along the road Thursday at Crane Lake in northern St Louis County.
2 Surf Scoters were seen on the lake and a Black-backed Woodpecker in the woods. The BB Woodpecker was a female and vocalized quite a bit - it was interesting to hear the difference in their call from the Hairy and Downey woodpeckers. Maybe the numerous small forest fires that occurred up here this summer has attracted larger numbers of BB Woodpeckers - have seen several since Labor Day weekend.
