Birded today with 4 people from Missouri and 7 people from Wausau, WI.
Temperature at Nichols Lake Rd at 7:40am was -28 degrees air temperature not
including wind chill. The temps rose to 1 degree at 3:30pm at the Wisconsin
landfill.

Highlights:
-American Three-toed Woodpeckers: 1. Male .4 miles north of Co. Rd 133 on the
Blue Spruce Rd. 2. Male 2.7 miles north of Sax Rd (Co. Rd 28) on the McDavitt
Rd on east side of road.
-Black-backed Woodpecker: Female 2.7 miles north of Sax Rd on McDavitt Rd on
west of road.
* Sax - Zim Bog in St. Louis County

- Hoary Redpoll: At the Blue Spruce Rd feeders in Sax Zim Bog , St. Louis Co.
There are at least two males and one female Hoary Redpoll at this feeder. One
of the male Hoary Redpolls has the classic ghostly appearance where the white
fringes of the feathering is much wider giving it a real frosty look. Even in
the shade on the ground the bird stands out in comparison with Common Redpolls.
One of the particapants has photos and hopefully I'll get copy to share with
others.

-Northern Hawk Owl: The same owl is still hanging around the area just north of
the Zim Sod buildings and about a mile south of the Stone Lake Rd (Co. Rd 319)
on Co. Rd 7 in Sax Zim Bog , St. Louis County. The bird was way out perched on
top of a tree at least 1/4 mi west of Co. Rd 7.
* searched for the Hawk Owl on Co. Rd 7/Co. Rd 28 with no luck and also
searched for the Airpark Blvd/Blackman Ave owl and did not find either one.

-Varied Thrush at Dave Alexander's feeder in Duluth. A nice looking make
Varied Thrush that even fed on the ground as 12 of us were standing 30 yards
away from it.
* Looked for the Townsend Solitaire at Yorkleigh Apartment Bldg & Leif
Erickson Park foot bridge in Duluth and was not able to locate it.

-Snowy Owl at 4:30pm located at the Duluth airport. The owl was on top of the
telephone pole right at the bend of the road near the Federal Express Bldg.

Other Birds:
-Pine Grosbeaks
-Evening Grosbeaks
-Northern Shrikes
-Snow Buntings
-Ruff Grouse

Tomorrow early am we'll be in Aitkin County.

No Great Gray Owl, B. Waxwings, Boreal Chickadee and gulls.
