On Wednesday, 7/23, Greg and Juliane Proper took Dale Yerger and I on a boat
ride to see a Western-type Grebe near Kabekona Narrows on Leech Lake.? It is
presumably the same bird reported from 7/21 by Carole Nimlos, and had first
been noticed by the Propers on approx. 7/14.? The bird is of extra interest, as
any Aechmophorus sp. would be a first county record.?? The bird may well be a
Western molting into basic plumage, but some investigation may be required to
eliminate the possibility of a hybrid Clark's/Western.? Plumage details can be
complicated by the molt status of the bird.? Photos will be posted on the blog
listed below if folks want to weigh in.? Good birding,

Ben
