It was moving about, making short calls, in an oak tree, which was in a thicket on the west side of the trail. She had a good look at the bird. For the rest of us who tried to find the bird after Susan observed it, the vireo was heard singing (once) and calling (3 or 4 times) on both sides of the trail for most of the morning, without emerging from the bushes and trees behind the clearing, except possibly once, in low light, so it couldn't be clearly identified. The space between song/ calls was very long (up to 45 minutes). The clearing is 200 yards south of marker #29 on the horse/dog trail at Murphy-Hanrehan Park Preserve. The trail is to your left after you go down the hill from the parking lot.
