A few days ago in Cook County, I heard repeated "chuwee" calls. Until I really paid attention this year, I did not realize that in addition to the "pee-a-weee" and "peeyur" calls, Eastern Wood-Pewees sometimes make a Yellow-bellied Flycatcher-like "chuwee". Is anyone aware of any good cues to tell these apart? I suspect that empids might be silent now so it was likely a pewee, but it was in a mixed aspen-conifer stand so either species would be possible, especially in migration. Thanks!
