Hi Liz,

these are excellent photos of a spectacular hawk. The warm brown coloration, rufous dorsal color of the tail, and rufous upper chest rule out a Harlan Hawk. Note the long wings, which are typical of a western red-tail, and not of our eastern sub-species. The tail coloration is intriguing. The deep rufous dorsal tail coloration suggests that this is an adult, but the white ventral tail coloration....? I am not familiar with this. Is this a rufous morph?

I drive Hwy 100 every day and have often noticed this dark hawk that Steve
mentioned, so today I finally went out to try and get some photos. I had
to briefly pull over on the on ramp to 100 SB so could only get off a few
shots, but hopefully these are good enough to identify if it's a Harlan's
hawk.

In between birding every available hour of daylight, I have been working,
driving around the Metro. The one bird I have been noticing is our
highway sentinels: the Red-tailed Hawks. Several of our winter hawks are
much darker than expected. One bird at Highway 100 and 77th in Edina, I
had to double back for a second look. I thought I had found a
Rough-legged, but it was a dark morph Red-tail.
