I'm responding to the recent postings about baiting in owls with fishing
line and cloth (or fur). Recently, a fellow birder came across a Rough
Legged Hawk that was hanging upside down (dead) from its legs high up in a
tree. It was tangled up and could not free itself which eventually led to
its death. If someone uses the procedure mentioned earlier to bait in Owls
all raptors would hit on it and could get tangled. I wondered how the hawk
could have got the line around its leg and probably will never know. But,
the culprit could have been a baiting line. Fishing line strung in any way
has a bad effect on fish, birds, animals and other biological members. Many
articles are out there pertaining to Loons, Herons ect. who have fallen
victim to the dreaded mono-filament line. Bird in a responsible way and
think of the consequences that may happen.
