A bit late posting but Lake Hiawatha has been a great place to easily view and study all three species of mergansers in breeding plumage.
This morning there were many Common, Hooded, and Red-breasted Mergansers, clustered near shore because of the remaining lake ice. Other species include Ring-necked Ducks, Common Loon, Gadwall, Wood Ducks, Scaup sp., Bufflehead, ... In addition, the Black-crowned Night-Herons returned a couple of days ago, day-roosting in the trees on Minnehaha Creek near the Lake Hiawatha outflow (just west of 28th Ave. S). Easy parking and paved path access: park on 28th Ave. S. along Lake Hiawatha. The night-herons are high in the trees along the paved path to the lake, on the left just after crossing the pedestrian crosswalk. Diana Doyle S.
