On Monday and Tuesday of this week, I observed ~400-500 Lesser Yellowlegs both
days on the west side of Smith Lake in Wright County (between Cokato and Howard
Lake). This is the site of a MN DNR lake drawdown project to improve the water
quality and overall health of the lake. The yellowlegs were seen on the west
side of the lake on the expanding mudflats near the lake outlet. Very
impressive spectacle. Other birds observed on the lake were ~35 pelicans,
trumpeter swans, a handful of gulls (didn't get species), lots of Canada Geese,
still quite a few ducks in the middle of the lake, plenty of Killdeer, and I
also think I saw two Wilson's Phalaropes.
