As we sat on our deck last evening, enjoying the wonderful weather, the hummingbirds were buzzing past to a feeder about 8 feet away. In the other direction, a pileated woodpecker came in to a hanging suet feeder(perhaps 10 feet away in the other direction) and many of the common species were at feeders and drinking from our pond. We were suddenly very surprised to see a green heron stalking the perimeter, trying to figure out how to get those fish! A first for our pond! When the heron pulled into its watching stance, it looked like a clump of leaves--difficult to see until it moved. It seemed oblivious to Paul moving to tend the grill. We have in our garden a plant called Knautia(pincushion flower). It produces lovely wine-colored flowers from early summer until frost. The goldfinch LOVE it! The mature flower heads are picked clean all summer; much preferred to the thistle feeder. The final bird burst was a very vocal pileated woodpecker shooting out of the trees chased closely by a hawk(I saw only a very light-colored underside as it flew over our heads and out of sight over the roof after the woodpecker).
