Seeing rusty blackbirds the last 5-6 days while duck hunting in western Becker
County. They seem to have a fovorite tree to perch in about 10 yards from a
spot I hunt. I enjoy watching them ALMOST as much as the ducks. This same
spot also has a resident flock of about 100 bonaparte's gulls that approach
within several feet in flight. Neither blackbird nor gull seem afraid of
gunshots. I saw a buteo yesterday that was a real tawny color. Almost thought
it was a bittern in flight (colorwise). Do red-tailed hawks show this color
variation? I did not see it with binoculars. It was approximately 100 yards
away. I first saw it flying low over the water and it perched in a tree near
the edge of the lake. Definitely not like any color I've ever seen on a hawk.
