Hi everyone,

Had a fantastic first trip to the Bog on Friday afternoon. My thanks to the
many emails I received before heading out. Along 133 we saw 3 Rough-legged
Hawks(lifer) (light adult and dark adult). We hit the Blue Spruce Feeder first,
we had the following species: Hairy Woodpecker, Black-capped Chickadee, Pine
Grosbeak (Lifer), Red-breasted Nuthatch, Redpolls (uncertain if both Common and
Hoary were present, will seek identification help from my birder friends but
wanted to give preliminary results). Saw the Gray Jay (Lifer) at the Arkola Rd
Feeder - I didn't realize how large they are. Enjoyed watching the Boreal
Chickadee (Lifer) at the Admiral Road feeder and tons of Black-capped - until a
Cooper's Hawk (need to confirm my ID but I'm pretty positive) landed at the
feeders - suddenly all bird song ended and they were gone. That was amazing -
he perched on a branch right next to us. We also saw Ravens along the roads. We
saw the Black-backed Woodpecker(Lifer) along McDavitt Road and Sharp-tailed
Grouse(Lifer) roosting in the trees. After driving up and down McDavitt hoping
to see the Great Gray my husband looked at the bog map I had and he says "Look
it says there are Great Gray's over at Stone Lake Road, let's try it" and bingo
he was right. Also a lifer bird for me. We only had three hours to drive the
bog before heading to Duluth for a funeral on Saturday. Those three hours were
a complete success. Thanks again for all the advice.
