Many thanks to the kind e-mails in response to this post. As you can tell I'm a new birder, and I think in my original I meant barred owls, not the less common long-eared, though those would be great to find as well to photograph. Barred owls are more common but I imagine not posted on as often, so it's just nice to know where they might be found and hopefully I can find some over the next few months. And maybe I'll get real lucky and find a Great Gray in Sax-Zim or Aitkin later this month.
