For those who have reported "small owls" found in Wood-duck boxes: Have the
boxes been mounted on a tree or was it on a pole with the usual predator
guard (sheet metal cone)? What this question tries to address is whether the
box needs to be buried in a tree to be attractive to a small owl. I ask
because boxes buried in a tree are much harder to protect from predators; a
free standing post much easier.
