7/16/12 Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge Long Meadow Lake UnitOld
Cedar Ave. Bridge Trailhead.Bass Ponds Trailhead Had another nice walk at Long
Meadow Lake this morning. Still no luck on the previously reported
Yellow-crowned Night-Heron. But there were still lots of Great Blue Herons and
Great Egrets around. Plus most of the other species observed yesterday. In
addition to a walk at the Old Cedar Ave. Bridge out to the Board Walk, we made
a quick stop at the Bass ponds. In the first pool to your right, at the bottom
of the hill from the parking area. The pool is in draw down and there were 8
Least Sandpipers and 5 Pectoral Sandpipers, plus about a dozen Killdeer. Some
of the new birds and highlights were: Peregrine Falcon - Observed sitting top
of one of the smaller smoke stacks, by the power plant. You should be able to
get a close up look from Black Dog Road.Broad-winged HawkVirginia RailSora -
