I just have to share a fun experience. My Husband built a permanent wooden blind in a field behind our home (we own 20 acres). This blind was built half underground so that, when sitting inside it, you are photographing at the level of the bird. There is a good-sized pond in front of the blind which draws a lot of birds. Lately, a Pileated Woodpecker has been flying in and he lands facing the blind window within 18" of it!!! I am using a 600mm lens to photograph the smaller birds so, needless to say, I am unable to photograph him. He lands and cocks his head at me. He stays put until I slowly move my arm to take a photo with a smaller lens I have at my side in the blind. I can move my arm super slowly but he gets nervous and takes off. I no sooner leave the blind for the night than I see him, from my kitchen window, sitting at the edge of the pond drinking water. He's so cute!
We have a lot of Eastern Bluebirds right now. There are over 50 of them. We also have Robins, Myrtle Yellow-rumped Warblers, juvenile Harris's Sparrows, Juncos, Chicadees, Fox Sparrows, Red-bellied Woodpeckers, Downy Woodpeckers, Northern Flickers, House Finches, European Starlings, a Cedar Waxwing (only one!), and Northern Cardinals. Sometimes, the pond is just a continuous row of different birds all drinking or bathing. Other times, it might be filled with all bathing Robins. It's so much fun to be in the blind clicking away at all the action. But, I've yet to capture a photo of that Pileated Woodpecker even with a small cell phone!!! Just had to share :) Linda Krueger www.FlightOfNature.com ---- Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
