Recently there has been a petition going around asking the White House to begin a new Federal Wildlife conservation stamp program. This program would be analogous to the highly successful *Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp *or* *Duck Stamp. These stamps help protect and set aside habitat for conservation with very little money spent on overhead.
This parallel program that conserves habitat and allows non-extractive users to easily and directly contribute to habitat preservation at the federal level would be a boon in many ways. It would provide birders (and others, like hikers and nature photographers) to have no moral qualms about contributing. The stamp would provide additional revenue to programs of conservation that are in trouble and facing cuts all the time. I thought I would ask the MOU list serve if they could both sign this petition and spread the word. It might not seem like much but if birders had the visibility and revenue behind them provided by this program we may see more conservation efforts behind non-game species and habitat. It will also be a great big flag to the government that birders are here, we are willing to put up money for conservation and we care.
