I have exactly the same thing happening here Erika.  Then I noticed where you 
are located.  I am in Andover, MN.
Just down the road from you.  I am not sure if this is usual or unusual bird 
behavior.  My husband and I just bought our house a few years ago and this is 
the first winter I have paid close attention.
