New (to me) arrivals since yesterday were: Eastern Phoebe, calling
insistently; Fox Sparrows, singing snatches of sweet song; and 5 Woodcock
foraging between the bluff trail and the larger lake.

The woodcocks were startled into flying across the path, onto the bluff
hillside, where they ambled in plain sight, relying on their camouflage. By
zeroing in on their pale orange bellies I was able to find them again, and
get great looks.

Another couple of birds that flushed from the lakeside flew deeper into the
wet areas there. These were darker in color and had a more striped
appearance, though their flight sounded similar. No flashes of white were
detected, but the thought occurs that they may have been Snipe, which have
been seen there in past years.
