Hi,
I was in California this past weekend and saw a small waterbird in a small
shallow inlet at the base of the hill in the town of Bodega Bay. It was
swimming with a bunch of Western Grebes. It was small (12 inch?) and
brownish, shaped like a grebe, average neck length, low and smooth in back
(no apparent tail). Yellow or tan bill. The bird had a distinctive fan-shaped
crest at the top of its head--it stood straight up like a turkey tail, and it
displayed the crest at will. It was the only bird of its type there. It dove
quite a bit, but did not stay under water for extended periods. Can anyone
help me?
