8/26 -8/29 - 2015
 
While birding in North Central Minnesota with Mark Junghans and Ron Erpelding 
the last few days.  We encountered a few species of note.  Here are a few of my 
favorites from the trip.
 
8/26
Mille Lacs county
Eurasian Collared-Dove - A Eurasian Collared-Dove was observed along the main 
street in the town of Long Siding.
 
8/27
Itasca County
Great Horned Owl - A Great Horned Owl was heard calling at the intersection of 
CR 3 and Bluebird Drive.
Swainson's Thrush - Several Swainson's Thrush's were observed at the public 
boat access at the intersection of Highway 6 and CR 63.
Warblers were observed at numerous locations, with a total of 11 species 
observed.  Golden-winged, Black-and-white, Pine  and Chestnut-sided were some 
of the more abundant species observed.
 
Koochiching County
Red-necked Phalarope - Three Red-necked Phalaropes were observed at the 
International Falls WTP.
Common Nighthawks were observed migrating between 5:00 and 7:00 pm, in 
Koochiching county.
 
8/28
Koochiching County
13 species of Waterfowl were observed, including American Black Duck, Northern 
Pintail, Bufflehead and lots of Common Goldeneye.  These were observed at the 
international Falls and Little Falls WTP's.
Cooper's Hawk - A Cooper's Hawk was observed West of the town of Big Falls 
along CR 30.
Shorebirds that were present a the International Falls WTP: Semipalmated 
Plover, Spotted, Stilt, Pectoral and Least Sandpipers, Red-necked Phalarope and 
Lesser Yellowlegs.
Birds observed along the Toumey-Williams Road included: Merlin, Blue-headed 
Vireo, Gray Jay, Golden-crowned and Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Northern 
Waterthrush, Nashville, Connecticut, Common Yellowthroat, American Redstart, 
Magnolia, Yellow, Chestnut-sided, Palm, Yellow-rumped, Black-throated Green and 
Wilson's Warbler and Dark-eyed Junco.
Boreal Chickadee - Several Boreal Chickadee's were heard and observed along the 
Pine River Road, about 3 miles North of CR 30.
Field Sparrow - Two Field Sparrows were observed at the entrance to a gravel 
quarry along CR 77, .2 miles South of UT 251.
