Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge Long Meadow Lake Unit Bass Ponds Trailhead Field Trip Report There were lots of birds moving at the Bass Ponds this morning. There were still large numbers of dabbling Ducks on Long Meadow Lake and we observed a small flock of Bonaparte's Gulls near pond C. There were distant looks at Ruby & Golden-crowned Kinglets and some of the group observed some Yellow-rumped Warblers. Song Sparrows were abundant and there were also a few Fox Sparrows and American Tree Sparrows. Prior to the walks some of the participants observed the Barred Owl, near the lower parking area and a possible Yellow Warbler was observed just East of the Lower Parking area. Here are a few of the species observed by the group: Waterfowl - 16 species, including Blue-winged Teal, Northern Shoveler, Lesser Scaup, Bufflehead and Northern Pintail.
