Love loons? Minnesota loon monitoring program is a great way to get involved with wildlife, particularly loons. Thanks to the efforts of hundreds of volunteers, we have over 20 years of data on more than 600 lakes distributed among six regions, or "index areas" of the state. This long- term data set gives us the ability to detect significant changes in the adult population and reproductive success of the state's common loons, and to anticipate any problems that could jeopardize the future of our state bird. We are in great need for volunteers. This survey takes place during a 10 day window in late June/early July. Here is a brochure about the survey: https://files.dnr.state.mn.us/eco/nongame/projects/MLMP_Handout.pdf The lakes that are available are under the heading "select a lake that needs a volunteer": https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/eco/nongame/projects/mlmp_state.html Other materials including the protocol can be found on our website. Please consider helping with this survey. The Otter Tail County and Itasca County (rugged access) areas are most in need of volunteers.
