On Saturday Dec. 15 we had a quite successful CBC with high numbers of
participants and
species, which is not surprising considering the 47 degree F. weather in the
afternoon and the
amount of open water on the Mississippi River. Among the highlights were the
Boreal
Chickadee found in Hubbard County by Bemidji State biology students Becca
Engdahl, Alex
Burchard and Thomas Anakkala on White Cedar Rd. in Farden Township. The trio
also found a
Canada Jay and extremely late first count record for Gray Catbird in Hubbard
County. Also
seen were the late lingering pairs of Ring-necked Ducks and Pied-billed Grebes
on the
Mississippi River in downtown Bemidji by the Water Treatment Plant. Also, not
unexpected
were the count's high records for numbers of Wild Turkeys and Trumpeter Swans.
Tentatively
43 species were seen and reported so far on count day. Good numbers of Pine
Siskins and
redpolls were also tallied along with the usual smattering of Red Crossbills.

Also, it should be noted that the Itasca State Park Count will be held on
Monday December 17
with the meeting time to coordinate the count for before 8;00 a.m. at the Jacob
Brower Visitor
Center near the Northeast entry point to the park. Bring a sack lunch if you
plan to participate
as no food is readily available in the count circle.
