This has been a week of mixed weather- first extreme cold on Sunday which got to 27 degrees below zero, then plus 30 on Tuesday only two days later. Birds are being seen and counted however, and most counts went well this week in spite of the weather. Beth Siverhus found a NORTHERN HAWK OWL in Lake of the Woods County along MN 72 at mile marker 53 on December 22. Larry Wilebski reported that a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER is still at his cabin in northern Kittson County despite the cold. In Beltrami County, a NORTHERN HAWK OWL was seen on December 21 along MN 72 just north of Kelliher between mile marker 26 and 27. The Agassiz CBC in Marshall County, was held on December 17 and 22 species were found including 81 SHARP-TAILED GROUSE, 90 WILD TURKEYS, several BALD EAGLES, one ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, 2 AMERICAN ROBINS, 28 COMMON RAVENS, 30 BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES, more than 800 SNOW BUNTINGS, 55 LAPLAND LONGSPURS, and 36 COMMON REDPOLLS. Also in Marshall County, a SNOWY OWL was reported by Gary Johnston one mile west of US 75 near Angus. Today, three BALD EAGLES were seen near the Warren airport. In Red Lake County, Shelley Steva saw an AMERICAN ROBIN in Oklee on December 20. Emily Hutchins reported that on the Glacial Ridge CBC in Polk County on December 15, she saw SHARP-TAILED GROUSE, RING-NECKED PHEASANT, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, MOURNING DOVE, MERLIN, BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE, AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, LAPLAND LONGSPURS, and SNOW BUNTINGS. Sandy Aubol saw an AMERICAN KESTREL on December 16. On the 12th , she had COMMON REDPOLLS in her yard in East Grand Forks, and on the 14th there was a PINE SISKIN. Leon Thoreson reported on the Crookston CBC on December 17,where 139 GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS were seen; other species seen included BALD EAGLE, a SHORT-EARED OWL, LAPLAND LONGSPURS, and SNOW BUNTINGS. 12 GRAY PARTRIDGE were seen near Gentilly, and in the city of Crookston were 6 EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, 9 AMERICAN ROBINS, 2 NORTHERN CARDINALS, PINE SISKINS, and PURPLE FINCHES. The Grand Forks CBC was held on December 18 and found 46 species in total including 19 AMERICAN ROBINS on the Minnesota side. The Fargo-Moorhead CBC, on December 18, found AMERICAN BLACK DUCK, BUFFLEHEAD, and NORTHERN PINTAIL at the Moorhead WTP. Other species seen on the Minnesota side of the river included BARRED OWL ,HARRIS'S SPARROW, and WESTERN MEADOWLARK. In Hubbard County, Rebecca Engdahl reported that the LINCOLN'S SPARROW was still being seen on December 19. Finally , from Otter Tail County, Wayne Perala reported a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK in Fergus Falls on December 20. Thanks to all who reported sightings this week.
