There is a nice example comparing the speed of concurrency in Oz and Java, look for 'death by concurrency' in the docs. On my machine Java was over 10 times slower. That's perhaps not a fair test, so you may try with a more interesting application and another language, I haven't done that yet. But it does open the eyes.

Well, that depends on what you are looking for. If you want libraries and user-community, Python, Perl, Ruby, PHP are your choice.

If you want coherent fusion of several major paradigms of programming, then Oz is your choice. It includes more paradigms than Erlang, Python, or Mercury for instance. Though the job market for Erlang seems a bit stronger. And Python even more so.

You can make some comparisons on speed here - http://shootout.alioth.debian.org/gp4/benchmark.php?test=all&lang=oz&lang2=perl

For single processor, Oz is a little faster than Perl or Python (per the shootout results). But the big win would be the ability to take the same program and run it in distributed fashion (still havent got to that chapter in the tutorial yet).

Hi,
