Subject: Mozart Next Release

Torsten, I hardly dare to ask on the Mozart mailing list.

As a hobby programmer and very much interested in parallel and constraint
programming I feel that Mozart/Oz has lot's of potential in multicore era. The
CTM book is convincing.
Why is there hardly any activity regarding that programming language?
Will there be a new version of Mozart/Oz? Peter van Roy once announced some new
functionality on the mailing list, but nothing happened since then.

Dear Markus,

First let me make clear that I am a Mozart/Oz user, not a developer (although I
occasionally provide bugfix patches). For me as a user Oz just works as it is,
the implementation is very mature and so it is fine for me that updates happen
only rarely.

Concerning multicore programming: this was addressed by the latest update
(1.4.0) which completely rewrote the distribution programming layer of Oz. A
minor maintenance release was already discussed at the Oz mailing list, but I
don't know its current status. Anyway, to see the development that is currently
underway you might want to check out the SVN repository at

There have been various fixes to the main development trunk since that last
release.

Log of changes to trunk. Warning: very long file... (last release was revision
17033)

The next major release will replace the current constraint programming layer
and replace it with an interface to Gecode. The main developer on this layer is
Gustavo Gutierrez. I understood from previous discussions with him that this
work is already in an advanced stage.
