I don't really know if this is the right group to put this question in, but I hope that you can help me:
I have re-installed my whole system (format C: method) and reinstalled Mozilla. Now I'd like to restore my saved passwords and forms. I have saved the "42990862.s" and "42990862.w" files because I thought I could use them again. I did change prefs.js to point at the right files, so that's not the problem.
Did you save your cert8.db and key3.db files too? You also need those.
I have to say that I used a master password for my password manager,
I'll bet you also enabled the feature to encrypt passwords (as opposed to merely obfuscating them).
I still know it. But Mozilla (1.5 Gecko/20031007) doesn't ask me for that password, when I click on "Manage Stored Passwords", nothing happens at all.
Does anyone have a solution, or at least some method to recover the passwords from the encrypted file?
Assuming you saved your original key3.db file along wiht the others, The following steps might work for you.
1. Keep your .s, .w and .db files backed up somewhere. 2. setup your new mozilla profile (not using your saved files) so that it does the things the old profile did, e.g. encrypting passwords, etc. 3. Exit mozilla, make sure the process is completely gone. 4. put your old .s, .w and .db files into your new profile. You may also need to play with prefs for filenames, but it sounds like you already know how to do that. 5. restart mozilla. It should behave as the old profile did with respect to your master password and old passwords.
Your mileage may vary.
Thank you
