it worked... thanks for your help.
As a result of your inquiries, I have ressurected an old test program for CRMF and CMMF. It was developed by the developer who originally coded mozilla's CRMF and CMMF implementations, but it was never finished.
It attempts to test a wide range of functions. I am trying to get SOME (not all) of that test code to work, and consequently I am finding bugs in the CRMF/CMMF libraries. The bugs fall into two categories: a) memory leaks, b) some CRMF/CMMF messages are improperly encoded.
I hope to have these bugs fixed for the NSS 3.10 release. Fixing these bugs is not yet officially on the NSS 3.10 release plan.
You can follow the progress of this here:
http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=244329
also, look at the bugs that are makred as "blocking" that bug. When those are all fixed, CRMF and (especially) CMMF will be more usable than at present.
Also, watch for checkins to http://lxr.mozilla.org/mozilla/source/security/nss/cmd/crmftest/testcrmf.c
