nsEmbedString is a lightweight implementation of nsAString that you can link into your application to allow your application to only depend on "frozen" gecko interfaces. binary compatibility is maintained for all frozen interfaces across different versions of gecko. so, the answer to your question depends on your particular needs. if you are using the XPCOM glue library with MOZILLA_STRICT_API defined, then you probably want to be using nsEmbedString instead of the non-frozen string classes (e.g., nsString, nsDependentString) which are used internally within gecko. if you only care about your code working with a particular version of gecko, or if you are willing to tolerate API changes, then you don't need to limit yourself to nsEmbedString.
