This is suppose to be a feature, but one that hasn't been 
perfected yet. The point of displaying a FTP bookmark as a 
folder is so you can access the FTP site by navigating 
through folders in bookmarks. I don't have bug numbers with 
me, but there should definintely be a way to access the FTP 
in the main viewport, or turn this feature off.
