FYI, I have filed a Bugzilla bug (ID: 97096) about
this, but it hasn't seen any activity. :-(

See all the comments at:

    http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=97096

As you can see there, I could trace my problem to
a couple of bookmarks that were referring to NT servers
that I hadn't authenticated myself to - if I remove those
URLs or if I authenticate myself to these servers, the
problem disappears.

However, this is not a problem with either IE 5.0 or NS 4.78.
