DOS has a 3 letter extension system.  3 alphanumeric characters.  0 - 9 
A - Z.  Windows can have 4, 5, 10 letter extensions if you want.  For 
instance, if I wanted I could instead of using .log for my programs, use 
.logfile.  I could use .logFileForMyProgram if I really wanted to.  The 
reason most programs still use an 8.3 filename is for backward 
compatibility and I don't think anyone has found a reason to use a 4 or 
5 letter extension yet
