That's right, but
a) <span style="white-space: nowrap">...</span> does the same (I
already mentioned that in my original posting) and
b) although Mozilla recognises it, <nobr> is not part of *any*
version of HTML/XHTML.
Because my HTML files are generated via an XSLT process, it's pratically
impossible to include those <span>s correctly and automatically.
