Well, it is valid HTML as per http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/struct/tables.html#h-11.2.4.2
however the spec includes the phrase "User agents are not required to support this attribute.". After a bit of searching at http://bugzilla.mozilla.org I found that your question is covered by Bug #2212 http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2212
and somewhat by bug #915 http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=915


The short answer is, no it doesn't work.
