One problem that I see is that for IMAP atleast, it gives the number of headers downloaded. Its possible that some of the mail headers it got were headers of already read mail. e.g. Say you use 2 computers to check your IMAP mail. On one you see 2 new messages, read the mails, shutdown and go to the other computer. Mozilla will then download 2 new headers but the mails are already read. I get the mail notification sound and the icon in systray says 2 new messages. Open Inbox and there is actually no new (unread) message. This is a problem with biff in general I think. Pratik.
