Immediate applications:
CSS loading
XSLT loading
Support for <a type="something" href="somewhere"> in the docshell.
Plugins (the "type" attribute of the <object> could be used as a hint to the
channel loading the plugin, thus improving things with plugins like
plugger, which handle multiple MIME types).
There may also be applications in other mozilla-based apps (not the browser per
se). Not sure about those, to be truthful. ;)
