Right, you're talking about S-HTTP, as discussed (for example) at

Other than Secure Mosaic I'm not aware of any browsers that ever supported S-HTTP. Certainly Netscape Navigator never supported it, nor does Mozilla. S-HTTP basically lost the "protocol wars" to SSL, and as far as I know is a dead protocol.
