You might want to check out IBM's alphaworks site -- specifically the 
DirectDOM package.  It's Java-based, but it does what you want and 
potentially works in both IE and Mozilla using the standard org.w3c.dom 
interfaces.  It's still a work in progress though - very rough around 
the edges.
