Using XUL and extrernal programms and stripping down mozilla

Hi just some short questions.
Can I use the nsILocalFile.lauch method to start an commandline tool and 
gather the information it prints out to stdout. to parse it later in 
javascript? Or do I need to write my own XPCOM class/DLL for that.
