Uninstalling a component

What is the proper way to uninstall a component?  I tried to simply 
delete the appropriate files in the chrome and components directory, but 
then Mozilla hangs when I start it.

I suppose it's because of the chrome.rdf file, and I don't really want 
to touch it manually... is there a decent way to uninstall a component? 
 Or is a user stuck with whatever component he installed till the end 
of time?
