I tried with wstring where the result was quite stranger. For a string "abc", I got a PRUnichar * that contains 0x6261 0x0063 like it is was still in ascii or utf8 ?
Sounds like either your XPT or one of your object files are out of sync. That would account for both situations. Make sure you've created an xpt file using xpidl and the one you just built is being used by the system.
