component (extension) registration in firefox windows

Hi, I have an xpcom component written in c++. I have created .dll and .xpt file and copied it to the components directory (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\components) Now i want to register it to the Firefox components directory. I have tried it to install by firefox.exe -register.   But it is not registered. How do i register the component in firefox ? What are the steps to do this?
