OK. So use the multi-layered, glue code in the Win/UNIX SDK samples, or
something else?  

I tried peeling this apart and I'm not really happy with all the
redirected calls necessary to get back and forth.  Also, I need the
plugin for the Mac environment, too, and these samples will not compile
there. 

Are there any other more straightforward examples?
