ShellExecuteEx equivalent in XPCOM?

Just wondering if XPCOM has already gone into the trouble of figuring out default apps to use for various file types in various desktops. Looks like a somewhat time-consuming task to figure this out, say, for Windows, KDE, and GNOME, on my own.
