I tend to agree with you that it's not a Firefox program (but perhaps some rogue program or virus) -- except in the possibility that Firefox is doing something to cause the problem. Again, I don't think there's a high probability of that, but it is a possibility, since it happens while I'm using Firefox.
To answer your question, Norton Internet Security is an umbrella application which encompasses firewall, antivirus, antispyware, etc. By disabling NIS, I disabled all of those. And, as noted, problem persisted.
