Hi,

I wondered if anyone has any suggestions to make as to what settings are
best to encode a radio play?
I have a set of 13 CDs that I wish to encode. The CDs contain the BBC Lord
of the Rings radio play. The contents of the CDs originally came from a
commercial tape set, released by the BBC, and was copied to CD by a friend.
It's mostly voice, but there are some sound effects from time to time.

I have tried (with 3.91):
--preset voice but this forces mono
--preset voice -mj didn't sound so good to me
--preset voice -v -mj this grew to average 96kbs

I've also tried --abr 64/80/96 and --alt-preset 64/80/96. And -V5 & 8
Plus I notice that "voice" includes --resample 24, which I could add to the
abr modes. (Otherwise 80 & 96 they seem to default to 32kHz).

I'll keep experimenting, but I only have time to listen to small segments at
each setting. And I have to admit that I don't really know what I am doing
here, as I don't properly understand what effect the different switches have
or how they interact.
So, I wish to ask - has anyone done anything similar? What worked best for
you?

Also - how good is lame at these lower bit rates nowadays?
I know that it's great at higher rates, especially with highly tuned
settings like r3mix and alt-preset standard. But I seem to recall people
saying it isn't so strong at lower settings.
Should I consider using a different mp3 encoder, or something like ogg?

Yours,

Ed
